Below are some representative comments taken from student evaluations over the last few years:

“Professor Brick is a great teacher who really tries and succeeds in making sure that every student understands what we are doing in class. The way he sets up his class is well organized and all of the material he presents to us guides us in the right direction of how we are supposed to write our papers. He gives great examples in class of specific details of our papers, and his random discussion questions help keep us engaged when we have been learning something new for an extensive amount of time. I wish I knew what section he was teaching for RC 2 because I would definitely choose him to be my instructor again.”

“This class really helped me to improve my writing skills. I know what I learned in this class will help me in future classes, whether it be English classes or writing a scientific report for any of my biology classes. I was never bored in class and all of the material was very engaging.”

“John Brick was an amazing teacher who engaged the class every day. The questions throughout the class were interesting and started up discussion. He was always available to meet and wanted his students to do well. In addition, he himself is an interesting man and wearing a kilt to class, wearing a pumpkin on his head, and drinking PepsiFish will always be brought up when thinking about my first year English class. Thank you!”

“Mr. Brick was a fun teacher to listen to during class, and he was always there for office hours. During the office hours, he gave good feedback on our papers and where we should be heading.”

“Mr. Brick was an incredible teacher that always kept his class lively and was understanding of the students’ work loads. He made sure he gave out a fair amount of work for each of the units and was never unrealistic with his expectations of us. He was very engaging, and I would recommend his class to anyone who had any hesitations in taking it.”

“Mr. Brick made the class great. Normally, I cannot stand sitting through an English class, but I really enjoyed RC2. I learned new concepts, and I was entertained at the same time. He was easy to get along with and was always available outside of class if you needed assistance on something. Additionally, everything was graded quickly, which was very helpful. Furthermore, he really read all of the papers thoroughly. There was always a large number of comments on each assignment handed back. When something could be better, there were comments that benefitted future writing. In addition, if Mr. Brick liked what was written, he would let us know. There were always many positive comments when I finished a well writtenpaper, and he was very detailed if something was marked off, rather than just saying it was wrong. Most importantly, though, was the positive feedback that I just mentioned. It is always a great feeling to receive positive comments all throughout the paper, or a “ha” laughing at a joke within the writing. My previous teachers have never really written anything positive other than a possible “good” or “great idea” at random points of the paper. Instead, I feel that positive feedback is important because it makes it easier to write something well if you know it will be carefully looked over and the effort will be appreciated. I felt like Mr. Brick really seems to enjoy his job, and that positive attitude rubs off on his students. I would highly recommend him, as he is the best teacher I have had at Marquette, thus far.”

“Mr. B is the groovy beat that makes the cool cat purrrrr.”
